John Rockwell is a former prosecutor and experienced jury trial lawyer who has tried 55 jury trials to verdict and brings over 20 years of experience in a variety of practice areas to Woolsey Morcom.
He leads the firm’s established criminal defense practice and focuses exclusively on successfully defending individuals accused of committing crimes in both state and federal court ranging from misdemeanors such as DUIs, theft, and battery charges to serious felonies including firearm possession and shootings, drug trafficking, arson, capital murder/death penalty eligible crimes, RICO, gang enhancements, white collar crimes, and fraud.
John also handles injunction/restraining order prosecution and defense, expungements and record sealing, and personal injury claims.
As a former prosecutor with the 4th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office for almost five years, John was promoted throughout his career to both Repeat Offender Court and ultimately to the Major Crimes division where he handled homicides, shootings, and other violent criminal offenses from initial crime scene response to jury trial including first degree murder cases where the State of Florida sought and obtained the death penalty.
After graduating from the University of Miami School of Law with Cum Laude honors in 2004, John practiced at a large, national law firm in downtown Jacksonville where he handled criminal defense matters as well as construction defect, foreclosure, real estate, and negligence claims in both state and federal court.
John also brings over six years experience as corporate counsel for two major insurance companies where he handled multi-million dollar complex construction defect, commercial general liability, and title insurance claims throughout the country. In this role, John learned how insurance companies think, evaluate claims, and what Plaintiff’s lawyers can do to trigger significant settlements.
Outside of the Firm, John was elected to serve as the Treasurer for the Northeast Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Jacksonville Humane Society – an organization and cause he is incredibly passionate about. He enjoys spending his free time with friends and family, animals, good food, and sports.
